THE DETOX DIARY

My sweet tooth and over indulgent nature has finally caught up with me and so in an attempt to reverse the damage I am undertaking a 12 Day Detox. I’m ditching caffeine, alcohol, dairy, meat, sugar and gluten and to help my body fully cleanse I will be taking herbal tablets from the Wild Rose D-Tox kit.I’ll be reporting here daily so feel free to follow along…

Starting weight – 128.6lbs

Feeling – In need of detox! Wish me luck!

Day 1 – begins the fun!

Breakfast – Porridge & Natural Honey
Snack – Banana
Herbal Tea
Lunch – Lettuce, chopped eggs, raw mushrooms, tomatoes, avocado, cucumber
Snack – Banana and mixed unsalted nuts
Dinner – brown rice, roasted sweet potato, marinated tofu, roasted red peppers
Herbal Tea

So my first day down and I have to say it wasn’t all that bad. I woke feeling very motivated and ready to go, through out the day I did have a few headaches I’m guessing that’s my coffee withdrawals! Also I will admit to being a little grumpy once the hunger pains kicked in but a Banana was quick to help cure any cravings. Dinner was definitely the highlight of my day, my boyfriend cooked a tasty brown rice dish and that helped me steer clear of my usual cup of tea and chocolate after diner snack!

My Tip – Be prepared! I planned on stocking up on lot’s of healthy foods before I started but I got caught working late, lucky enough I managed to scramble some healthy food options together…(although I just found out Banana’s are supposed to be avoided so I’ll need to find a new snack tomorrow)

Weight – 128lbs

Day 2

Breakfast – Spelt Fruit Scone (Edit – I have since learnt that spelt contains gluten so either I read the signage wrong as gluten free – or I was tricked! So watch out no spelt)
Water
Snack – Apple
Herbal Tea
Lunch – Lettuce, chopped eggs, raw mushrooms, tomatoes, corn, cucumber
Dinner – brown rice, roasted sweet potato, marinated tofu, roasted red peppers
Water

What a difference a day makes, day two Ugh!!  I won’t lie an absolute nightmare of a day! I woke with the worst stomach cramps so I decided to skip my morning Wild Rose herbal tablet dose. The stomach cramps came and went through out the day but my banging headache lasted for the entire day! (I need to drink more water). Strangely enough my joints ached too, especially my knees and to top things off I had to work late – which didn’t help! But once I got home my boyfriends brown rice dish gave me a little comfort, I attempted to watch a movie but by half the way through I was falling asleep feeling achy and painy, almost flu like.Bed early at 10.10pm in hopes tomorrow is a better day. (I should mention my boyfriend is also doing the detox and he didn’t experience any stomach cramps – so as with everything in life each person is different)

Tip –  Drink plenty of water…I kid you not!

Weight – 127.7lbs

Day 3

Breakfast – Grilled grapefruit & honey
Water
Lunch – Organic dairy free sweet potato soup, organic gluten free bread, lettuce, cherry tomato, cucumber, avocado
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Organic gluten free bread, tomato, avocado, lettuce, falafel
Water

Thankfully today was nowhere near as bad as yesterday, some headaches but sipping on water seemed to help. My daily intake was a little bit more exciting today adding soup at lunch and once again my boyfriend pulled it out of the bag with dinner this time by adding some falafel (instead of deep frying he dried on a pan with extra virgin olive oil) so that kept me ticking along nicely. It’s strange coffee and tea are my biggest missed treats…I’m not actually craving chocolate which I find very hard to believe seen as I usually eat some every night!! I still feel quite tired and a little sluggish, waiting patiently for the new me to appear! 😉

Tip – Have a healthy snack on you at all times, you never know when a craving will strike!  Also drink some water…I keep telling myself when a coffee or food craving kicks in “it’s not that I can’t have it, I am choosing not to have it! It will still be there for me in 9 days time”  maybe I’ve gone slightly crazy with the lack of food but for some reason it works for me!

Weight – 128 lbs

Day 4

Breakfast – Spelt Fruit Scone
Water
Lunch – Organic dairy free potato soup, boiled sweet potato
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Salmon,lemon,extra virgin olive oil,roasted sweet potato,lettuce,avocado

I found it so hard to get to sleep last night, my legs were aching so bad and I had a severe chill in my feet I’m talking ice blocks folks, I threw on a wooly pair of socks and that saw me soon off to sleep! Today I woke feeling a little lighter and definitely less bloated! Headaches, stomach cramps and joint pain were thankfully rare and nothing compared to the previous days…I feel a wee bit guilty now looking back over my daily intake which was pretty Irish (as in a lot of potatoes)! But it is Friday so I guess I deserve a little treat! I’m feeling slightly bloated after my dins Back to being good tomorrow!

Tip – Water, water and more water

Weight – 129.8 lbs

Day 5 & I’m alive!

Breakfast – Organic Porridge & Blueberries
Water
Snack – Corn on the cob
Lunch – Veggie/Vegan burger (buns substituted for gluten free bread) salad, fries
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Brown rice & Veggie Chilli
Snack – gluten rice crackers
Water
Herbal Tea

I woke bright and early and ready to go  woo hoo!! Possibly a bit too early for a Saturday morn at 7.30am! But I’m not complaining I had a very productive day. Once I got work out of the way the rest of my day was pretty consumed by food eating and then shopping for it! Shopping on this detox isn’t easy, gluten free products are pricy! Homemade food is definitely the way to go, so I bought lot’s of fresh organic veg for soup! Thrilled that I am finally starting to feel the benefits!

Tip – Try your best to keep up a normal routine, I think this is important for carry the healthy eating buzz after the detox finishes. We usually eat out on the weekends it’s something I really enjoy so we visited a local veggie/vegan diner, the food was so tasty. I’ll definitely be making a return visit even after the detox!

Weight – 127.6 lbs

Day 6

Breakfast – Organic Porridge & Blueberries
Water
Snack – Corn on the cob
Lunch – Organic Tomato Soup – Gluten Free

Herbal Tea

Sunday usually the day of rest but I woke early and raring to go, at least I call 10am on Sunday early!  No sign of detox headaches and I am hungover free a very liberating feeling! 🙂 Mild weather tempted me outside and I managed a 4 mile run, I did feel slightly weak after it but a nice bowl of warm soup did the trick…While watching Moneyball I had some unsalted popcorn (not usually my treat of choice – but sadly my Ben and jerry’s doesn’t comply!)

Tip – Get creative with food, I wouldn’t be cooking’s greatest fan but this diet gets quite repetitive if your not careful! So I made my homemade soup for my work lunches yum yum…a nice break from salad! I have been busy collecting some recipes so stay stunned for some healthy food on the blog!

Weight – 127.2 lbs

Day 7

Breakfast – Organic Porridge & Blueberries
Water
Snack – grapes
Lunch – Homemade Carrot & Ginger Soup – with leftover gluten free bread
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Thai peanut sauce with marinated tofu cubes, tomato, cilantro, cucumber, bean sprouts, chopped peanuts, herbs & spices
Herbal Tea

I woke feeling very tried almost felt back to my old sluggish self…perhaps my few treats at the weekend are to blame? Or maybe it’s just Monday morning syndrome! I had a tasty vegan take out dinner though which lifted my spirits on a snowy night….

Tip – Working late again almost killed me, I was stuck in the office until after 9pm with no food or snacks! Killer, I was very tempted to cave as I do have a stash of chocolate but I persevered! This is my second time to get caught out like that if only I followed my own tip – see Day 3! 🙂

Weight – 127.5 lbs

Day 8

Water
Snack – grapes

Herbal Tea

A new dawn a new day! I felt a lot better today and food wise was a treat. My boyfriend made a tasty healthy fish and potato pie he added Cod, filet of salmon, smoked salmon, spinach, grated carrots celery chili & vegan cheese, chopped parsley & tomatoes, some seasoning and mashed potato on top! Yum

Tip – Well I can’t take any credit thank god for my boyfriends creative cooking skills for keeping the detox interesting!

Breakfast – Spelt Fruit Scone
Water
Lunch – Homemade Carrot & Ginger Soup – Cous Cous & green Salad
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Gluten free brown Gnocchi with home-made tomato & veg sauce
Snack – Gluten free organic tortilla chips & hummus
Herbal Tea

This detox is a roller-coaster…today I was craving a cup of coffee and some chocolate but don’t worry I didn’t cave the end is in sight! I seem to be gaining weight the last few days I think its due to my snacking on chips & popcorn with no exercise…

Tip – PMA – positive mental attitude! Every time a craving hit’s I think why I’m doing the detox – for my health and as the saying goes your health is your wealth

Weight – 128 lbs

Day 10

Breakfast – Organic Porridge & Blueberries
Water
Lunch – Sweet Potato and quinoa pie, with side salad
Herbal Tea
Dinner – My Boyfriends home-made fish & potato pie
Herbal Tea

On the home stretch now just two more days to go, I find it strange day 6 & 7 I think I felt more energy and motivation the last few days have been tiring, but it’s probably more to do with my long working hours more so than the detox…Today I returned to the scene of crime the health food shop where I bought the detox at lunch they have a hot food counter with lot’s of gluten free, vegan options…perfecto! Needless to say myself and my friend Tiffany (also on the detox) really enjoyed a hot lunch out….makes a nice change from re-heating soup in the lunch room!

Tip – It’s definitely easier to stick to the detox if you have support around you, thankfully my boyfriend and my friend are all doing it so it makes resisting temptation a little easier…as Dogtanian once put it “one for all and all for one!”

Weight – 128.5 lbs

Day 11

Breakfast – Organic Porridge & Blueberries
Water
Lunch – Sweet Potato soup with side salad
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Flax, Hummus, grilled spinach, tomato, cucumber, parsley, sunflower sprouts, red onion, tamari, mixed herbs, lemon and chili powder
Ginger and maple herbal Tea

$12 for lunch a small soup and salad, I couldn’t believe it! One thing I do note over this health food is expensive. Once the words gluten free or organic is marked on the packet you know you you wallet is in trouble. Thankfully for me tomorrow is my last day. I went to my new favourite restaurant Fresh on Spadina for a vegan gluten free dinner with my friends followed by a herbal tea with fresh ginger – a nice change from after drinks at PJ O’Briens!

1 more day to go…Woo hoo!

Weight – 128.8 lbs

Day 12

Breakfast – Organic Porridge & Blueberries
Water
Lunch – Organic tomato soup with falafel salad sandwich
Herbal Tea
Dinner – Fish pie
Two glasses of red wine & some chocolate!

My last day and I really can’t tell you how happy I am! I followed my usual diet through-out the day and even fit in a gym session. Then at nine o’clock I went to friends for some birthday celebrations…To mark the end of my detox I opted for red wine instead of my usual beer, I declined cocktails and shots and instead indulged with some chocolate! Yum yum. Waking up after a night out with out a hangover felt great.

Weight – 128.6 lbs

The Outcome

Over all I would say the first few days were definitely the hardest, for me the headaches and stomach cramps were killer but by day 4/5 I felt great so I guess I can now say it was worth it! From day 5 till now it’s been a mixed bag at times I felt great and sometimes under the weather, mainly if I had an attack of hunger or a craving for a coffee or chocolate then I was a tad grumpy to! But I was surprised my cravings weren’t as bad as expected. I am happy to report I underestimated my will power… Now that I have reached the end I’m delighted I did the detox and stuck to it without breaking once, I’m quite proud of myself!

I can’t say it’s been life changing but my stomach is feeling the benefit of staying clear of  beer, spicy foods and caffeine.  A few people have comment on my skin and that it looks good,  and I have been sleeping like a log, which is unusual for me as I’m normally a very light sleeper.

So what will I take from this experience? Well I will continue to ask myself what I am putting into my body? Generally I don’t have a bad diet – my motto has always been everything in moderation and I will continue to stand by this.  However I am going to make an effort to buy more fresh food, and prepare it myself rather than buying it pre-made whereby it’s full of sugar and salt! It maybe more expensive and a bit more hassle to start but you are what you eat! So home-made breads, soups and sauces are on the list so far! I don’t need to eat meat everyday, and I will definitely reduce the amount of caffeine, alcohol and chocolate I consume and who knows maybe just maybe I might do another detox in six months time!

  2. While doing a tour of your wonderful blog I took a quick look at your detox page.
I see that you were going ‘gluten free’ for the detox. I see there is mention of a spelt product. Spelt is a type of wheat and is DEFINITELY not gluten free.

I am gluten intolerant, as is my daughter. She is 23, has been off gluten for four years. Important result: her asthma, which was quite serious, is completely gone.

Since we are relatives of yours, chances are you yourself should be avoiding gluten altogether.

    All the best.

    • Hi Violet – thanks for your comment thats good to know, in the health food shop they were marked as gluten free perhaps I read their signage wrong? anyway its good to know and I will make an edit to this just incase! Interesting to hear that about asthma maybe its time I try to eat more gluten free friendly food

      thanks
      Emma

  3. Found your site by googling ‘aching legs with detox’ as I’m doing a diet (Patrick Holford fatburner diet) similar to yours and my legs are aching so much! The headaches have gone thankfully. I also have symptoms like having a cold. Thanks to reading your blog I know this is normal and don’t have to worry. Just have to persist to the end of the week (I’m on day 4) and I’ll be fine.
    Have a good week,
    Lisca
